Jeannyvett Colon began her music journey in her home country of Puerto Rico at the age of 8. Her earliest lessons were on the piano. She started playing the clarinet at the age of 13. Following her high school graduation, she attended and graduated from the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music with a degree in Clarinet Performance. In order to make money during her schooling, she worked with Corporacion de Las Artas Musicales (which is now called 100 by 35), to teach piano and clarinet lessons. Prioritizing her education, she went on to earn a master’s degree from the University of New Mexico. Jeannyvett is the first person in her family to attain a graduate degree.
Because of her love for teaching and learning, Jeannyvett has inspired many of her own family members to get college degrees. One of her cousins that live in Puerto Rico is studying Forensic Science, while another one has become a Nurse. Yet another cousin is building a CPA office in Texas, as another serves in the Marines in California. Her family legacy is now forever changed.
Dr. Brandie Buford met Jeannyvett during the summer of 2017, as Jeannyvett was beginning her third year of teaching in Texas. Although Brandie taught 5th grade at that time, they collaborated to merge the joy of writing with the musical arts. Their projects engaged 5th graders, parents, and the community in diverse and inclusive performances. Dr. Buford shares, “Jeannyvett’s passion for music has inspired several generations of learners to explore and appreciate their individual talents in the arts. She not only selflessly gives and serves her students, she also serves her fellow teachers and families.”
Jeannyvett is currently in her 4th year of teaching music at Emerald Heights Elementary in Silverdale, Washington, serving 20 classes of 1st-5th grade students. She also directs the choir, leads Safety Patrol, and is the Equity Lead for her school. Jeannyvett is an integral part of her school environment. Not only does she serve in the aforementioned areas, but she is also the elementary union representative for her school district, helping teachers access their association benefits. Jeannyvett is also the only Hispanic teacher at her school and wants to make sure that her voice as well as those like hers are heard. She has the privilege of translating for the families at the school as well as assisting them with IEPs and accommodations. Her relationship with her students extends to their families when she serves in this capacity.
PE specialist, Diane Wohlert and Jeanny often work very closely together. Sometimes in collaborative activities, the students in their classes become “Team Music” or “Team PE!” It’s a friendly competition between their disciplines and is always tempered with the understanding that there is great value in both music and P.E. Parents at Emerald Heights have commented on how much fun their children are having because music and P.E. work so well together. Sometimes they team teach together to collaborate on cross-curricular activities. Diane remarked that “Jeanny has made me a better teacher as well. Her enthusiasm for learning new and interesting ideas to bring to our students is contagious. I am very lucky and appreciative to have a specialist teacher like her every day.”
Prior to completing two levels of Orff Schulwerk, Jeannyvett was terrified to allow her students to move around; she was afraid to lose control of her class. After experiencing Orff Schulwerk firsthand, she started implementing movement in a structured way– teaching about levels, pathways, and directions. Now she can’t imagine a classroom without movement and exploration. She says, “I allow my kiddos to just be joyful. I love their giggles and their creative ways! As soon as they enter my classroom they ask me to move!” She feels the connection she has made with her students is the most important contribution she could make to her school community. Colleague and friend, Auri Roberts states, “Jeanny is an amazing music teacher. She meets the needs of all learners and engages students in learning. She is mindful and considerate of the needs of individual students both academically and socially.”
Jeannyvett’s passion for teaching and connection are powerful forces with her students as well as her colleagues. She created two social media groups to help keep her Orff levels colleagues connected, encouraged, inspired, and up-to-date on great opportunities to deepen their practices in elemental music and movement. One of her colleagues, Eleanor Burns, notes that “Jeanny has such a passion for teaching music. When we are in workshops together she is always asking questions to make sure that she understands. Her energy is so contagious. You will always be smiling when around Jeanny. She is always trying the things that she learns with her students. Jeanny is always willing to help and always looking out for everyone. She is always eager to share ideas and lessons that she creates.”
Jeanny enjoys teaching many different things through elemental music and movement. She especially loves to teach recorder to her students. She prepares them using a bracelet that helps them remember to keep their left hand on top as well as using bubbles to help them to learn how to use a gentle air stream before giving them recorders to play. Once they have their recorders in hand, she incorporates accompaniments using barred instruments to level up musical experiences. It seems her students will always ask for more! She loves enriching her lessons using stories, games, and interesting items like Balinese-style shadow puppets to engage her students in as many ways as possible.
Staying in touch with her roots as a private lesson instructor, Jeannyvett also takes time to assist her students individually. She helped a student learn English by adding him to her choir earlier than she normally would. He is now speaking and understanding English much better than he would have because of his time in the choir. Another student had an incentive put in place such that if he gets his classwork done instead of procrastinating, he can visit and play recorder duets with Mrs.Colon during her planning time. His work completion has become very consistent since this has been implemented. He now wants to “do music” when he gets older.
Her conservatory professor, Sonia Ivette Morales-Matos, shares that “Jeannyvett is a very passionate teacher. She is very creative and resourceful, and above all, she loves kids. She is constantly looking for opportunities to have her students grow as musicians and as human beings, through classroom activities and performances in and out of the school. She has high standards for what music pedagogy should be and as a result, she is always in pursuit of professional development. She shares her knowledge and resources with other teachers, including myself, and has become a mentor to many of her colleagues.” Jeannyvett regularly attends professional development and immediately brings those ideas back into her classroom to share with her students. In her own words, “I am a life-long learner!”

Jeannyvett Colón comenzó su jornada musical en su país de origen, Puerto Rico, a la edad de 8 años. Sus primeras lecciones fueron en el piano. Comenzó a tocar el clarinete a los 13 años.
Después de graduarse de la escuela secundaria, asistió y se graduó del Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico con un Bachillerato enfocándose el de Clarinete. Para ganar dinero durante
sus estudios, ella trabajó con la Corporación de Las Artas Musicales (que hoy en día se llama 100 por 35), para enseñar clases de piano y clarinete. Dando prioridad a su educación, pasó a obtener una Maestría de la Universidad de Nuevo México. Jeannyvett es la primera persona de su familia en obtener un título universitario posgrado.
Debido a su amor por la enseñanza y el aprendizaje, Jeannyvett ha inspirado a muchos de sus miembros familiares a obtener títulos universitarios. Una de sus primas, que vive en Puerto Rico, está estudiando Ciencias Forenses, mientras que otra se ha convertido en Enfermera. Otro primo está construyendo un CPA en Texas, mientras que otro sirve en La Marina Estadounidense en California. Su legado familiar ahora es cambiado para siempre.
La Dra. Brandie Buford conoció a Jeannyvett durante el verano de 2017, cuando Jeannyvett estaba comenzando su tercer año de enseñanza en Texas. Aunque Brandie enseñaba quinto grado en ese entonces, ellas colaboraron para mezclar el placer de escribir con las artes musicales.
Sus proyectos involucraron a los alumnos de 5to grado, padres, y a la comunidad en presentaciones diversas e inclusivas. Dra. Buford comparte, “La pasión de Jeannyvett por la música ha inspirado a varias generaciones de estudiantes a explorar y apreciar sus talentos individuales en las artes. Ella no sólo desinteresadamente da y brinda sus servicios a sus alumnos, también sirve a sus compañeros maestros y familiares”.
Jeannyvett está actualmente en su 4to año enseñando música en la escuela primaria Esmeralda Heights en Silverdale, Washington, sirviendo a estudiantes en 20 clases desde 1ro a 5togrado. Ella también dirige el coro, dirige la Patrulla de seguridad, y es la persona que dirige la Equidad en su escuela. Jeannyvett forma a ser una parte integral de su ambiente escolar. No solo ella servir en las áreas ya mencionadas, pero ella también es la representante de la unión de maestros en su distrito escolar a nivel de escuela primaria, donde ella ayuda a los maestros con los beneficios que provee dicha asociación.
Jeannyvett también es la única maestra hispana en su escuela y quiere asegurarse que su voz al igual que las voces de las demás personas como ella también se escuchen. Ella tiene el privilegio de traducir para las familias en su escuela, así como también ayudar con las familias con el Plan Educativo Personal (IEP) y las adaptaciones. Su relación con sus estudiantes se extiende a sus familias cuando ella sirve en esta capacidad.
La especialista en educación física, Diane Wohlert y Jeanny trabajan a menudo y muy de cerca. A veces en actividades colaborativas, donde los estudiantes en sus clases se convierten en “Equipo Música” ó “Equipo Educación Física!”. Es una competencia amistosa entre ambas disciplinas y siempre está templada con el entendimiento que hay un gran valor tanto en la música como en la educación física. Los Padres en esta escuela Esmerald Heights
han comentado lo mucho que se divierten sus hijos porque la música y la educación física trabajan bien juntas. A veces ellas enseñan en equipo para colaborar en actividades multidisciplinarias. Diane comentó que “Jeanny también me ha hecho una mejor maestra. Su
entusiasmo por aprender nuevas e interesantes ideas para traerlas a nuestros alumnos es contagioso. Soy muy afortunada y estoy agradecida de tener una maestra especialista como ella todos los días.”
Antes de completar dos niveles de técnica ó modo de Orff Schulwerk, a Jeannyvett le aterrorizaba permitirle a sus estudiantes moverse (bailar); ella tenía miedo de perder el control de su clase. Después de experimentar Orff Schulwerk personalmente, comenzó a implementar el uso de movimiento (baile) de una manera estructurada, enseñando sobre los niveles, vías (o manera de formar un camino) y direcciones. Ahora ella no se puede imaginar una aula de clases sin movimiento y exploración. Ella dice: “Permito que mis hijos/as simplemente estén alegres. Me encantan sus risas y sus formas creativas! ¡Tan pronto como entran en mi aula de clases me piden que nos movamos!” Ella siente que la conexión que ha hecho y logrado con sus alumnos es la contribución más importante que podría hacer a su comunidad escolar. Su colega y amiga, Auri Roberts afirma: “Jeanny es una profesora de música increíble. Satisface las necesidades de todos los estudiantes e involucra a los estudiantes en el aprendiendo. Ella es consciente y considerada de las necesidades de los estudiantes individuales tanto académica como socialmente”.
La pasión de Jeannyvett por la enseñanza y la conexión son fuerzas poderosas tanto con sus alumnos como con sus compañeros/as. Ella creó dos grupos en las redes sociales para ayudar a mantener a sus colegas de los niveles de Orff Schulwerk conectados, animados, inspirados y actualizados sobre grandes oportunidades para profundizar sus prácticas en la música elemental y el movimiento/ baile. Una de sus colegas, Eleanor Burns, señala que “Jeanny tiene una gran pasión por enseñar música. Cuando estamos en los talleres juntas ella siempre está haciendo preguntas para asegurarse de que entiende. Su energía es muy contagiosa. Siempre estarás sonriendo cuando estés cerca de Jeanny. Ella siempre está probando y tratando de aplicar las cosas que aprende de los talleres con sus alumnos. Jeanny siempre está dispuesta a ayudar y siempre está pendiente de todos. Siempre está ansiosa por compartir las ideas y las lecciones que crea”.
Jeanny disfruta enseñar muchas cosas diferentes a través de la música elemental y movimiento. A ella especialmente le encanta enseñar flautín a sus alumnos. Ella los prepara usando una pulsera que les ayuda arecordar que deben mantener la mano izquierda en la parte superior, así como usar burbujas para ayudarle en aprender a usar una corriente de aire suave antes de darle los flautines para tocar. Una vez que tienen sus flautines en mano, ella incorpora acompañamientos utilizando instrumentos de barras para aumentar las experiencias musicales. Al parecer sus estudiantes siempre le piden ¡Por más! Ella ama enriquecer sus lecciones utilizando cuentos, juegos y artículos interesantes como marionetas de sombras Balinesas para involucrar a sus alumnos en todas maneras posible.
Manteniéndose en contacto con sus raíces mientras instruye lecciones privadas, Jeannyvett también se toma el tiempo para ayudar a sus alumnos individualmente. Ella ayudó a un estudiante aprender inglés agregándolo a su coro antes de lo normal. Ahora él está hablando y entendiendo inglés mucho mejor de lo que lo hubiese hecho debido a su tiempo en el coro. Otro estudiante tenía un incentivo puesto de tal manera que si él hacía su trabajo de clase en vez de procrastinar, podría visitar y tocar duetos de flauta dulce o flautín con la Sra. Colón durante su tiempo de planificación. La finalización de su trabajo se ha vuelto muy consistente desde que esto se implementó. Él ahora quiere “hacer música” cuando sea mayor.
Su profesora del conservatorio, Sonia Ivette Morales-Matos, comparte que “Jeannyvett es una maestra muy apasionada. Es muy creativa e ingeniosa y, sobre todo, le encantan los niños. Ella está constantemente buscando oportunidades para que sus alumnos crezcan como músicos y como seres humanos, a través de actividades en el aula y actuaciones dentro y fuera de la escuela. Ella tiene alto estándares de lo que debería ser la pedagogía musical y, como resultado, ella siempre está en la búsqueda de talleres de desarrollo profesional. Ella comparte sus conocimientos y recursos con otros profesores, incluyéndome a mí, y se ha convertido en mentora de muchos de sus colegas”. Jeannyvett regularmente asiste a talleres de desarrollo profesional e inmediatamente trae esas ideas de vuelta a su aula para compartir con sus alumnos. En sus propias palabras, “¡Soy una aprendiz de por vida!”
